Grinder Capabilities: A Look at the Phoenix – Weldon’s Large Capacity ID Grinder

Maintaining accuracy over production runs and reducing changeover time are constant pressures for manufacturers. The Phoenix ID Grinder – a heavy-duty CNC grinder that can automatically grind diameters, tapers, chamfers, radii, shoulders and contours in one set-up and one continuous operation using a FANUC CNC control – was engineered specifically to meet the needs of manufacturers.

Equipped with high frequency, liquid cooled electro-spindles for ID grinding, the Phoenix is designed for high-production, heavy-part applications, carbide/ceramic and flex-production applications. It supports a wide range of components: transmission gears, pump cam rings, wear plates, large bushings, air-foil inserts, rotary valves, and bearings.

Precision, repeatability, & reliability require a machine that controls vibration and maintains thermal stability. With Weldon’s Shear Damper machine base design, the Phoenix addresses these needs and delivers the control and reliability necessary for complex grinding operations.

On top of standard features, the Phoenix can be customized with optional features to deliver more specific outputs:

  • A 22” swing capacity to accommodate larger workparts.
  • Programmable gear drive workhead with rotary scale (250 RPM max) for non-round cam applications.
  • Multiple grinding spindle configurations – providing the opportunity for mounting 2 ID grinding spindles or 1 ID spindle and 1 OD spindle to perform multiple grinds in a single set-up.
  • X and Z axis linear motors for high-speed or non-round applications.
  • Probing for lateral location and post-process gaging for size control.
  • Electric rotary dressing systems for superabrasive wheels or extended diamond life when grinding with standard abrasives.
  • Manual and powered jaw chucks, collet chucks, magnetic faceplates, vacuum chucks, expanding arbors, pitch-line chucks, and custom fixtures to address workholding solutions.
  • Coolant supply and filtration systems to suit any application.
  • FANUC 6-axis robot integration on a turnkey basis.

More than a standalone machine, the Phoenix is a configurable platform built to support long-term manufacturing goals.
